For the second year in a row, Ziggy and his band present a special evening honoring the biggest legends of reggae music, once again at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, July 15. Joining Ziggy this year are special guests Toots & The Maytals, Maxi Priest, Freddie McGregor, and Bob Andy.
The Grammy-winning Toots & The Maytals, led by Toots Hibbert, are considered preeminent legends of reggae music, with their unique combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Toots is also featured as a guest artist on Ziggy Marley's "Take Me to Jamaica," from the album Family Time, and joined Ziggy on the Bob Marley Roots Rock Reggae Festival in 2004.
England's own Maxi Priest rose to fame with his trans-Atlantic chart-topping hit "Close to You" in the early 1990s but he has been making reggae music for nearly 30 years, and with over 10 album releases, has been crowned the "King of Lovers Rock" and is one of the world's most successful reggae solo artists of all time.
Internationally acclaimed, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer Freddie McGregor has been moving people with his conscious lyrics for over 40 years. Equally at home in lovers rock or roots & culture, he boasts many fan favorites like "Big Ship," "Push Come to Shove," "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely," and "I Was Born A Winner."
One of Studio One's leading lights, Bob Andy gained international recognition with his cover of Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black," a duet with Marcia Griffiths, who joined Bob Marley's I-Threes in the mid-70s (and who performed at last year's Legends of Reggae festival concert). A prolific songwriter and performer whose career spans nearly 50 years (and former Tuff Gong executive to boot!), Andy inspires new generations of fans as more current artists continue to pay tribute to Andy with cover versions of his songs.
The evening, which is part of KCRW's World Festival, will also feature a set by Ziggy.

From Ziggy: Next weekend Jan 21st 2012 I will play a benefit concert in Boulder Colorado USA for GMO Free Boulder. Genetically Modified Organisms are not something I would feed to myself or my children. The struggle for humanity today and in the years ahead is the struggle to remain free, and especially free from Genetically Modified Organisms as food. Without knowledge, information, choice and a say in society about our food and our land, our basic freedoms are denied. Our lives and our children's lives, the life of earth, plant and seed are today in our hands. here is some info.
Genetically Modified Food has entered the national food system without the consent of the American public. Species that are not sexually compatible are now genetically manufactured in laboratories and the new seeds are then owned by a single patent holder who has taken control of the food system. Creating insecticide inside the cells of the plants has created a new era of farming that has lead to a genetically altered food that has never been tested for human health yet has been moved to our grocery shelves without notice. As awareness increases across the globe, these new foods are now banned in 36 countries while Americans are unaware of the GMO component in their own food due to federal regulations that have refused to label GMO foods.
And now, the patent holder of these new seeds seeks to increase their profit margins by taking over publicly owned lands to grow crops they can sell on the international commodities markets for corporate gain. In a move to take over public Parks and Open Space in Boulder, Colorado, the patent owner, Monsanto, lobbied public officials to ensure they gained a foothold in the future of Boulder County's agriculture.
In what has come to be known as the epicenter of the natural and organic foods industry, Boulder, Colorado took a stand. GMO Free Boulder is a campaign to raise awareness about the truth behind the ownership and genetic modification of our food system and how that system has infiltrated our local Parks and Open Space, our political policy, our school lunch system and most importantly, the lifestyle that has come to be known here as health and sustainability. They are supported by both local and national business leaders, citizens, doctors, authors and school children and gives a voice to the 71% of voters in Boulder County who want GMOs prohibited on public land.
In a vote that took two years, three advisory committees, concerted lobbying efforts by international giant, Monsanto, and the lead story in the local papers for months, GMO Free Boulder and thousands of local citizens successfully led Boulder County Commissioners to weigh heavily in favor of policy to include the labeling of all GMO foods as part of their legislative agenda and to ban the use of GMO alfalfa that would have destroyed the organic dairy farm industry in Boulder County. However, Monsanto successfully expanded their stake in public lands when the Commission voted to allow new GMO sugar beet seeds to be considered along with the continuation of GMO corn as legal crops on public land.
In 2012, GMO Free Boulder will continue to rid GMOs from the public arena, in both agricultural land as well as public school lunch as there have yet to be any pediatric studies on human health effects of GMO consumption in children. Allergies, diabetes, obesity and illness are rising at the same rates as the acreage of GMO crops are planted.
From Ziggy:Interesting 2012 so far. Africa keeps coming up on my mindar ( radar ) After posting on two great Africans i post on another with reason. The ANC ( Africa National Congress ) with the leadership of brother Nelson Mandela led the struggle against the ignoble apartheid regime in South Africa. The ANC celebrates it's 100th birthday today sunday the 8th. i will never forget the days of my youth hearing about the ANC in jamaica and feeling solidarity with the struggle and so wishing i could go there to join the struggle. So today we say Happy Birthday ANC and thank you for standing up for Africa. All the best Father Mandela. Jah Bless you

From Ziggy: Africa seems to be on my mind in this new year. First Fela and now H.I.M. it is 2012 and a vision of the Unity of Africa is haunting me. here are some words of H.I.M. "Furthermore no clear consensus exists on the how and the what of this union. Is it to be in form federal, confederal or unitary ? Is the sovereignty of individual states to be reduced if so by how much...... On these and other questions there is no agreement, and if we wait for agreed answers , generations hence matters will be little advanced, while the debate still rages..... The opponents of Africa's growth whose interest would be best served by a divided and balkanized continent..."
